The peace of God

Open Bible in a peaceful setting

“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

When a thoughtful person approaches death, they leave an inheritance to those they love.

What they leave expresses at least three things:

1. Their love for them.
2. The value they place on them.
3. The finest fruit of their work that they can pass on.

When Christ was about to leave His disciples, He did not leave them a safe, money or connections, but peace.

John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.”

In God's Word, peace has several meanings depending on the original word and its context.

For example, when Paul tells the Philippians that God's peace, which passes all understanding, will guard their hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7), the Greek word is eirēnē, pronounced “eye-RAY-nay”.

Peace beyond understanding? Beyond all intelligence or knowledge?

Do you know what that means? Literally:

1. National tranquillity: freedom from the rage and devastation of war.

2. Peace between individuals: harmony and concord.

3. Security, safety, prosperity and happiness, because peace and harmony keep things safe and flourishing.

4. The Messiah's peace: the way leading to peace and salvation.

5. The tranquillity of a soul assured of salvation through Christ, fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly circumstances, whatever they may be.

6. The blessed state of the godly and upright after death.

God's Word is so rich and deep. Meditating on it is much more than reading it.

I do not know what you are going through, the challenges around you or the important decision you must make, but may this eirēnē peace be yours this week, in Jesus' name!

I see you experiencing this peace, in Jesus' name!

This week, may you testify to the peace of God, in Jesus' name!
